The National League of American Pen Women honors Kymberli Brady

The Santa Clara County branch of the National League of American Pen Women honored author and journalist Kymberli Brady, along with eight other women at a celebrity luncheon on Feb. 7. The organization promotes the development of the creative talents of professional women artists, writers, dramatists, lecturers and composers in the fields of letters, art, and music.

"The purpose of the National League of American Pen Women is to honor and encourage women in the arts," said Achievers Chair Susan Zerwick. "Women don't get encouraged enough."

Brady agrees. "Its always inspiring for a writer to be recognized by her peers," she says. "Especially when recognition is so hard to come by in this field."

Coming on the heels of the Benjamin Franklin Award for Book of the Year, Brady considers this recognition an honor. "I've been so fortunate to have had my books honored in the past, but this one's personal--not so much based on what I've written, but what I've been able to do."

The National League of American Pen Women is organized in 170 branches throughout the United States and has a membership of more than 4,000 women. The Santa Clara County branch was founded in 1922 and currently is the largest group in Northern California.

"Being together with other professional women, all sharing an interest in the fields of letters, art or music is inspirational," says Santa Clara Chapter President Sharon Haugen. "It's a great group."

According to Haugen, being a Pen Woman is considered to be an established honor. Many distinguished women have been members in the past, such as Erma Bombeck, Louisa Kennedy, Ellen Longfellow and Gloria Vanderbilt. Many wives of presidents are also members; Hillary Clinton and Barbara Bush are currently Pen Women.

The headquarters of the National League of American Pen Women is in Washington, D.C. in the Pen Arts Building, built in 1887 and formerly owned by Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln.
